Curly Jade Plant Growth Update

Curly Jade Plant is currently my favourite plant. It was the first plant I purchased after moving to London but this is not the only reason I love this plant.

I couldn’t water the plant for 3 months when I went to Korea. Naturally, I saw that the plant had almost dried up on my return. I watered the plant and it came back! It survived! I think this is why I cherish this plant even more.

It also grows well. The weak parts of the leaves recovered and the plant became bigger and bigger. I can literally see the difference every week.

Leaves became bigger than my thumb !

I found this baby growth from the surface of the soil and I moved this to a small pot. But it died because it was left under direct sunlight.

I got a SHITTY plant from Patch Plants

This was my 6th or 7th order from Patch Plants. I used to receive good quality of plants from patch so I kept using Patch.

On one of the past orders, I got ZZ plant (Zanzibar Gem), Calathea Orbifolia (Prayer Plant) and Phlebodium aureum(blue star fern). The ZZ plant was okay but the Prayer Plant had the worst quality out of all previous orders. (Swiss cheese plant is the worst one now though) Phlebodium aureum and Calathea Orbifolia had brown-ish leaves and there were weird marks on leaves. Also they looked vulnerable.

I thought that was a one-off lapse in quality so I bought another plant from Patch, expecting a nice quality of plant as before.

This is what I received from Patch. I couldn’t believe what I got. It’s Swiss cheese plant (Monstera adansonii) and it’s broken and withered. Also one leaf had torn. I don’t understand why they gave me this shitty looking plant. I’m trying to save this plant but I don’t think I can. It’s too vulnerable.

I sent this picture to Patch and they said a replacement plant was going to be delivered. They delivered a DIFFERENT plant to a DIFFERENT HOUSE. They never delivered to a different house before. It wasn’t even to my next door neighbours or my neighbourhood. So I couldn’t even pick it up. So in the end, they refunded money.

I’m not going to use Patch again.

Growing cacti from seeds

I wanted to have cacti but I couldn’t find any good quality ones at reasonable prices. So I bought cactus seeds from ebay. It was really cheap and I can see the whole growth process of cacti. Actually I’m not sure whether I can germinate these seeds but I gave it a go.

I bought paper pots and potting mix soil for the cacti seeds.

I bought Neobuxbaumia Tetetzo (15seeds £1.24), Echinocereus Viereckii (15seeds £1.50), Browningia/Azureocereus hertlingianus (15seeds £1.50) and I also bought 20 Bird of Paradise seeds.

These are the Bird of Paradise seeds. I thought they were fake seeds when I saw them for the first time because of the bright orange coloured hair on the seeds.

These small seeds are cacti seeds!

I put soil in the pots and made name tags with dates on it. I seeded all of them on the 26th of April.

I watered and put the seeds in the soil. I also covered the pots with clingfilm to keep them moisturised.

I’m writing this post on the 15th of may and I’m still waiting for them to germinate. The Bird of Paradise seeds are said to take 8 weeks to grow sprouts and cactus takes a few weeks.

Soil Moisture Meter/Plant Water Monitor

I bought XLUX Soil Moisture Meter from Amazon a few days ago.

It was always confusing to check the soil with my finger or a wooden stick. This product will help me a lot because it shows the level of moisture beneath the surface.

It’s really easy to use.

1.Insert the probe of the meter to the plants’ root level.
2.Note the moisture level in the dial which has ten scales.
3.Remove the probe from soil and wipe clean after each use.

It shows the moisture level from 1 to 10 (1-3 dry, 4-7 moist, 8-10 wet)

I checked my plants with this. It’s the Calathea Orbifolia plant which was watered in the morning.

It’s the Scots Pine tree and I watered this yesterday.

It’s the Phlebodium Aureum plant. It likes moisture at all times so I watered this plant after checking this meter which is showing a level of 3.

I really like this product. It’s so clear to read and makes caring for plants so much easier.

Japanese Laurel Seeds

I got two Japanese Laurel fruits and planted them. Actually, I’m not expecting this to grow well but the seed was so cute and I couldn’t throw it away. So I gave it a go.
